Modern Farmhouse Style Master Bedroom. All the details on how I turned our master suite into a charming, cozy, and relaxing retreat.
Modern Farmhouse Style Master Bedroom
If you’re new around here, we move a lot. My husband is in the Air Force, and we’ve been moving roughly every 1-3 years since we got married back in 2007. In the Summer of 2018, we moved back to Charleston, SC.
Our first home as a married couple was also in Charleston. We built on the other side of town, and we enjoyed the building process. So after nearly a decade of renting, we decided to build a home from scratch again.
I fell in love with the model of this home online, and my husband was able to visit in person before we signed the paperwork. I did everything from Germany via Facetime, including the design meetings. The first time I saw it in person was when we arrived back in the U.S. just a few weeks before closing.

Come on in!
I love the layout of this house. Having the master and main living areas downstairs and the kid’s rooms, guest room suite, and loft area upstairs means it’s a whole lot easier for me to keep the main floor neat and tidy.
So, this is what you see as you walk into our room. It gets a ton of direct sunlight in the mornings, which I love!
The hubby is big on small mom and pop places, and I knew he’d love the “Bed & Breakfast” sign I found online.
We’ve had the same headboard for years. I got a vision in my head when we lived in Alabama of using an old door for a headboard.
It had to be deliciously chippy, and I also wanted it to have sconce reading lights. After drawing a rough sketch for my hubby, we found an old door at a local “pickers” kind of place, and the hubby got to work. It came out just as I had envisioned it.
Up until we moved to this house, we were still using my college furniture. It was dark and dreadfully out of style. We ventured into a cute shop called Nadeau, and my hubby spotted this lovely dresser and nightstand set. The main living areas of our house have kind of a Coastal Modern Farmhouse vibe, and we felt these fit right in.
I added tall seagrass hampers for extra storage, a few decor pieces, and opted to keep the gray IKEA chair we bought in Germany in the room to save some money. I just added a cute fuzzy pillow and draped a new blanket over it, so it fits into the room’s overall style a bit better.
And yes, I know the experts say not to have a TV in your bedroom. But we love laying in bed and watching a show at night to unwind after the kids go to bed!
I adore Magnolia trees and flowers, but I’m the legit WORST with live plants, so I opted for pretty fake Magnolia stems and a matching wreath.
My hubby got a special kit at Lowe’s that allowed him to hide the TV cords in the wall. It’s a little thing that makes such a big difference.
Did I mention the hubs didn’t know I was doing this room?
One morning, I had just finished an hour-long conference call with Tombow doing a run-through of my Pinners Conference Brush Calligraphy class.
After I finished, I impulsively decided the Master Bedroom needed to become a cozy and romantic retreat. So, off to Target and Pier One, I went. The whole thing took me about two days.
When I decide to do a room and get a vision of how it will look in my head, I’m a woman on a mission.
I added a floor basket under the window to corral the hubby’s military gear (some is also hiding behind the blanket ladder we DIY’d). I worked in more masculine touches on his side, such as the metal bin on his nightstand shelf and a wooden globe.
On my side, there are books galore, a feminine vase with more Magnolia stems, and a full-length mirror that we already had.
This shot shows the entry to our bathroom and closet. That little wall between the doors is one of my favorite elements of the room.
I used a plate hanger and filled it with these little apothecary-style bottles that, as luck would have it, fit perfectly. The greenery came in them, by the way.
Below that, I added a rustic basket. I filled it with a cozy blanket and nestled this “Let’s stay home” pillow on top.
Modern Farmhouse Style Master Bedroom: The Master Bath
Here’s a peek into our bathroom. We opted to delete the master bath, which left room for a considerably large shower and extra linen closet.
I also asked the builder to omit mirrors so we could add our own. We went for the builder-grade lighting and are gradually replacing all the cheap lights with better fixtures.
Don’t you think fun mirrors add a lot of character to a space? It’s such an easy and affordable change to make form the flat builder grade mirrors.
We replaced the lights in the bathroom already, and I love them so much more than the builder-grade lights!
Is the shower not glorious?! I added a seat so we can sit down as we get old, ha!
The river rock tile on the bottom was something my husband loved, so I made sure to fit that into our design budget. The glass doors aren’t as hard to keep clean as I’d feared.
The rug is so full of texture. I didn’t love it at first, but it’s grown on me in a big way!
That’s the end of the tour, but I want to share a source list in case there’s anything you have to have!
